While the Israeli spokesperson expressed concern over these comments, he also pointed out that Guterres had devoted only one minute of his speech to condemning terrorism, effectively giving the terrorists a soft spot. The Israeli representative argued that instead of supporting the victims, the UN Secretary-General was holding them responsible for collective punishment meted out to the Palestinian people.
"Instead of sending a message of 'never again,' he is essentially telling terrorists that they have a green light. We accept your heinous terrorism because, to them, Israel is to blame," the spokesperson said.
